A palace, a religious ensemble and dynastic memory

Shakhrisabz is closely linked to the Timurids. These different monuments reveal the city’s history; the detailed sequence is in the itinerary.

Palace

The scale of Ak-Saray

The surviving portal piers show the ambition of Amir Timur’s palace project. These are ruins, rather than an intact palace.

Ensemble

Dorut-Tilovat

The mosque and mausoleums introduce the city’s religious life and memorial architecture.

This memorial ensemble is associated with Jahangir and the ruling dynasty.

World Heritage

The historic centre as a whole

The historic centre entered the UNESCO list in 2000. It has been on the List of World Heritage in Danger since 2016, with that status retained in 2026.

Reading the itinerary: Allow about 3–4 hours overall. The start time and meeting point are agreed in advance. Opening conditions, conservation work, weather and your pace may affect the order. Access to every interior is not guaranteed.

Meeting Meet your local guide at the agreed point in Shakhrisabz. The time and guide language are recorded in written confirmation.
First Visit the Ak-Saray palace ruins and surviving portal piers. Access to individual areas depends on visiting conditions.
Next Visit Dorut-Tilovat: Kok-Gumbaz Mosque, Shamsiddin Kulal Mausoleum and Gumbazi Sayidon. These monuments form one ensemble.
Then Continue to Dorus-Saodat, Jahangir Mausoleum and Hazrat Imam Mosque. These are Timurid memorial places, not Amir Timur’s actual burial site.
Finish Leave time for questions and photographs, then finish at the agreed point. Onward travel and a car are arranged separately.

Walking depends on the meeting point and accessible parts of the route.

Shakhrisabz summers can be very hot. Bring water and sun protection; do not rely on constant shade.

Visiting conditions

Conservation work may restrict individual areas. This does not mean that the entire route is closed.
